As May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, Dr. Correa aims to shed light on the importance of mental well-being, break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversation about mental health issues.
This newsletter provides resources and information to support you and your loved ones in your mental health journey.
Understanding Mental Health: Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and behave. Just like physical health, mental health is crucial for our overall well-being. Mental health is health.
Statistics: According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 450 million people worldwide live with mental illnesses. In the U.S alone, 1 in 5 adults lives with a mental illness.
Breaking the Stigma: Stigma can often prevent individuals from seeking help. Dr. Correa designed this practice to be a safe and judgment-free space for her patients to discuss any mental health concerns. She will bring it up too, whether or not you like it.
Treatment and Recovery: Mental illnesses are treatable just like rashes or diabetes! Many, many people with mental health conditions recover completely. Treatment options can include medication, psychotherapy (talk therapy), and a healthy lifestyle.
Resources: a. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): Offers support groups, free education, and resources for patients and families. b. Psychology Today: Directory of vetted psychologists and counselors. This is Dr. Correa's first stop when searching for a counselor for her patients.
Tips for Mental Well-being: a. Self-Care: Regular exercise, balanced diet (Dr. Correa's favorite CliffsNotes version of this is "lean protein and vegetables"), and adequate sleep can greatly contribute to your mental health. b. Connect: Spend time with family, friends, or support groups who can provide emotional support. Call a friend or two every week. If you don't have friends, that's okay. Join a class at the city gym or recreation center and make some new friends. c. Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as meditation, deep breathing and yoga can help reduce stress and anxiety. Dr. Correa recommends writing down 3 things you are grateful for every single night on a scrap piece of paper, Notes app on your phone, journal or wherever you want. This practice has a powerful effect on one's mindset! And if you have trouble sleeping, Dr. C recommends the Get Sleepy podcast (no affiliation). d. Limit Alcohol and Avoid Non-Prescribed Drugs: Alcohol and other substances can exacerbate mental health issues and even trigger brand-new ones.
